Personally I think using simulations to get an estimate of material properties is a great way to wead out useless materials.
However finding the precise properties of materials using only simulation seems a bit unfeasable, because of the difficulty to simulate large bulk materials. Some properties, or effects will be missed if the simulation is not inclusive enough. Simulations are often only managable if something is disregarded.
I think experimental verification will always be nessecary.
