We call them Ab-initio because they are a base with no previous foundational theory, so classical mechanics is in its own the building block of some different theories, but it is not derived from another model. It is foundational. Similar thing with quantum mechanics. Classical Electromagnetism is similar, its first principles are maxwell’s equations.
