I believe that computer modeling and simulation have made or will make materials development very efficient and economical. It can save a lot of time and money. But there are hurdles to overcome. It is often found that the properties of the materials computed are little different from the real synthesized materials. Moreover, the calculations require supercomputers that are not accessible to everyone.
