Quantum-based materials calculations are a simulation activity because it is based off of pre-existing theory. It uses the equations from quantum mechanics that have already been theorized. Now, the calculations try to emulate this real life phenomena. People intuitively may have a different opinion because quantum mechanics is not yet a mature field.
