Correlation energy is not exactly the same in quantum mechanics as in classical mechanics, because quantum mechanics has spin statistics. A Slater determinant takes into account the Pauli exclusion principle, which is a kind of correlation between particles, but the Hartree-Fock method does not fully take into account all electron-electron interactions exactly. This is why there is an extra “exchange energy” step added.
