Quantum mechanics/ classical mechanics/ thermodynamics/…. are all ab initio models because based on conservation of energy and a few field related “constraints” they describe a large selection of processes. For electromagnetism conservation of energy combined with the Maxwell equations would be the first priciples of the ab initio model.
