A theoretical activity consists of creating new theory. Materials calculations are a simulation activity, where the theory is used but not adjusted. It should be noted that some people might argue over this last statement. The truth is it’s just not that simple, even in theoretical research groups, material calculations are performed. The goal of those calculations however will be completely different. Theorists will try to develop new science, computationalists will try to optimize that science for common use.
