Quantum mechanics is an ab initio method because it starts from the Schrödinger equation, similarly classical mechanics is an ab initio method because it starts from the Newton equation, or the principle of the least action.
Electromagnetism can be called an ab initio method because it is derived from the Maxwell equations.
