Ab initio means to me that a system is broken down to the basic impulses and responses that define it. In lattice simulation, the Schrodinger equation would be the basic principle that describes how electrons interact, which is the determinant of solid state properties. In classical mechanics, the proper equations would normally be Newton’s laws of motion, Hooke’s law, or other fundamental equations. To me, classical electromagnetism is not ab initio, and requires quantum effects to truly reach first principles.
