    Quantum mechanics is indeed an ab-initio model given the fact that Schrodinger equation doesn’t rely on classical laws for its formulation. Also, the wavefunction contains all the required information regarding the system at hand. Thus, it can independently predict and reproduce natural observations without relying on any other theoretical model.
    The same holds true for classical mechanics. Given the Newton’s laws are irreducible into further simpler laws, it can be called a ‘first principles method’.
    It is not difficult to see that EM theory is no exception to the rule. Given its starting point lies at the formulation of the Maxwell’s equations which do not assume any knowledge of quantum or classical mechanics, it is indeed an ab-initio model.
