The Born Oppenheimer approximation assumes that the movement of the nucleus is negligible compared to the movement of electrons. This approximation will not be valid if the motion of the nuclei is significant, which could be due to interactions between two nuclei. I think it will also be needed for the nuclei to be close to their equilibrium position, which would be in some lattice-like formation for a solid.
