Electrons require an asymmetric wavefunction, meaning it cannot simply be the symmetric product of individual wavefunctions that would sum their energies. This phenomenon is unique to quantum mechanics and does not occur at the classical level. To compare how interactions influence energy in quantum versus classical systems, a Slater determinant is necessary.
