    In classical mechanics, the correlation is the difference between the exact energy and the sum of the individual energies. In quantum mechanics, there are two ways to rewrite the many-body wavefunction. We can write it as a product of single body wavefunctions, using the Hartree method. Or we can write it using the Slater determinant, using the Hartree-Fock method. Both methods give a different energy.
