For the classical Solar system, the theory would be more conveniently defined in terms of the Hamilton functional, that is, if the Hamiltonian acting on the planet’s equation of motion gave the object’s total energy. Moreover, the “density” in this “DFT” example would refer to the mass, rather than charge density and the potential would be that of gravitational rather than electrostatic field.

The problem’s formulation would otherwise be similar. The Hamiltonian would comprise of a kinetic term given by the known momentum of a single planet, the “Hartree” potential term similarly averaged for all other planets’ gravitation, the Sun’s external gravitational potential, and finally the exchange correlation gravitational potential. Solving this problem by minimising the total energy would again be simpler than looking for a many-body system’s equation of motion.
