Simulation cannot be considered as a theoretical study as in a theoretical study a mathematical model is build for a physical process while simulation is about solving equation for a process in a computer.
These two study are mistaken to be same as both does not required a instrument to perform some kind of experiment and generally can be done by sitting in front of a computer.
