This is a very interesting question. I think the vision of designing new materials from thought is very ambitious and exciting, but also very challenging and not very realistic in the near future. I do not agree that we can design new materials without experiments, because computation alone cannot capture all the complexities and uncertainties of the real world. Experiments are still necessary to validate, verify, and refine the computational models and predictions. I think this vision is more of a long-term dream that may take decades or even centuries to achieve, depending on the advances in science and technology. However, I do believe that computation can play a very important role in accelerating and guiding the discovery and design of new materials, by providing insights, hypotheses, and suggestions that can be tested experimentally. Therefore, I think the best approach is to combine computation and experiment in a synergistic way, rather than relying on one or the other. This is my personal opinion, and I would love to hear what others think about this topic.
