    Some terms were left out of the Hamiltonian, so the approximation is only valid when these are much smaller than the other terms in the Hamiltonian. For example, if the motion of nuclei is very large (e.g. extremely hot solids, non-solid materials where the nuclei are allowed to move much more freely, etc.), the approximation will be poor.
