Jacob’s ladder represents the advancement in XC functionals for DFT calculations. As you advance up the ladder, the accuracy of the calculations increases due to the addition of ‘better’ ingredients. However, computational efficiency decreases as you ascend the ladder. The first rung is the LDA, then the GGA, then meta-GGAs, Hydrid functionals, and RPA-like approx.
