The Jacob’s ladder approach is a methodology that aims to continue improving the quality of exchange-correlation functionals. The idea is that when designing a new functional with an aim to improve on what exists, keep everything that works in the previous functional (previous wrung of the ladder) in this new functional and add the new features alongside the existing ones.
