Jacob’s ladder refers to the philosophy that is used to find improved functionals: we keep everything that works in the old functionals and then step by step (as climbing on a ladder) we introduce new things and make the functional more accurate until the ‘divine’ functional is reached (which is located at the top of our ladder).
