I strongly agree with the argument made by Gerbrand Ceder. There are countless technological advances which have been and will be facilitated by materials science. Simulation aids the investigation of novel materials, thus expediting technical advancements.
It is interesting to consider this idea in the context of materials for computering. A positive feedback exists where computer simulation enables the design of new materials to be used in smaller and more efficient transistors with advancements in that field providing more powerful simulation capabilities.
