the theory of materials behavior is well established and the fields formalism are known. the experiments confirm the theory and there is need for new theory, rather the focus is on reproducing the experimental facts about materials with math.
People confuse the two because theory is mostly intertwined with simulation. Theorists are also mostly simulators
