    The material’s calculations are to complex to do with just a pen and a paper. We have the fundamental equation from the theory (the Schrödinger equation) and by using approximations we can solve this equations with computers. That is why the calculations are not theoretical anymore.
    I think people assume this is theory because you put your theoretical equations into a computer and the computer tries to solve them. Just like a theorist but not with a pen and paper.
