Quantum-based materials calculations are a simulation activity, not a theoretical activity. This argument can be supported by the notion that simulations materials calculations are based on pre-existing equations and laws which describe quantum mechanics; theoretical activities involve the discovery of the behavior of formal systems, not their application.

Many people intuitively have the opposite opinion as solving the equations of quantum mechanics proves to be a very difficult task. Regardless, the equations have already been derived.
