It is possible to use QM to solve simpler molecular systems, like Schrodinger’s equation for H-atom or using CI techniques to solve a system with few atoms. However, for solids, it becomes relatively difficult to use because of 3N degrees of freedom, where N = number of atoms and 3 is the spatial degree of freedom.
