In DFT, Jacob’s ladder is one strategy to obtain the exact XC-functional through a hierarchy of increasingly more accurate but computationally more expensive functionals. Each step of the ladder adds a refinning variable of electron interaction to the step below. The balance between the level of accuracy and the computational costs is what most researchers have to consider in their application of DFT.
