    So turns out I was wrong in including velocity degrees of freedom. Instead, the spatial coordinate of each particle is relevant, giving 2×3.

    this might be counter-intuitive because no experiment is necessarily done. Both theory and simulation can be done (in principle) with pen and paper, or more realistically on computers.

    As mentioned in the video, ‘nuclei and electron clouds’ would be slightly better than ‘atoms’. Also I would add that the objects in a solid have fixed equilibrium positions about which they can vibrate. This is slightly different from not being able to freely move, which is something that atoms in for example a H2O molecule cannot do either, but that is not necessarily a solid.
